Herb Alpert "Acrylic Series" of Paintings

Just as the origins of Herb Alpert's music with the Tijuana Brass can be traced back to a Tijuana bullfight, his start as a painter likewise began with a trip south of the border. Though Alpert's work as an abstract expressionist painter has been inspired by a number of different sources over the years, he cites his single greatest influence as artist Rufino Tamayo, whose work first sparked his interest in painting in 1963.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Herb Alpert has spent more than half his life as a respected abstract expressionist painter, whose work has exhibited all over the world, from New York to Antwerp, Belgium. Since he began painting in 1969, Alpert has experimented with a number of different styles and materials, perhaps none more unusual than his current medium of choice: organic coffee.

The City of Malibu Honors Herb Alpert & His Totem Sculpture "Freedom"

HerbAlpertPresents - February 14, 2014 - The City of Malibu will honor the 9-time Grammy Award winner Herb Alpert’s striking 17 foot tall bronze totem sculpture “Freedom” as the first ever permanent public art installation in the city.  The Chumash Tribe, in partnership with the Southern California Indian Center, performed a ceremonial dances at the event, while the students from the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA and CalArts shared their musical talents.   Guest included Rock Star Sting and Actress Daryl Hanna.

WABC New York - Interviews Herb Alpert With His Sculptures in Dante Park

WABC - New York | January 23, 2014 - by Kemberly Richardson - Herb Alpert is a music icon, widely known for his skill with the trumpet. Now he has also mastered another art: sculpture.

It is only fitting that Alpert, now 78, decided that Dante Park was the ideal spot for three imposing sculptures that twist and turn towards the sky. The totems are all Alpert originals. "When I saw this location, I said 'oh, perfect, across from Lincoln Center - how lucky!'" adds Alpert. (Video After The Jump)
