Herb Alpert brings his trumpet and his wife to the Ventura Music Festival

VC Reporter | By David Cotner - May 7, 2015 -  You may not know the titles — “The Lonely Bull,” “Rise,” “Spanish Flea” (The Dating Game theme song) — but you know the songs to which they belong the moment you hear them. They’re by Herb Alpert, perhaps the most famous trumpeter in the world apart from Miles Davis (or possibly Gonzo on The Muppet Show). With more than 72 million records sold — both solo and with the Tijuana Brass —

L.A. Times / Art, not politics led to dissident artist Tania Bruguera's Herb Alpert award

Los Angeles Times | By Carolina A. Miranda - May 1, 2015 - For the first time in the 20-year-history of the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, a winner won't be able to attend the presentation ceremony for political reasons.

Dissident artist Tania Bruguera, one of five artists to receive an unrestricted grant of $75,000 from the Herb Alpert Foundation, had her passport revoked by the Cuban government and is unable to leave the country.

New York Times - Review: Herb Alpert and Lani Hall Bring Rhythmic Precision to Café Carlyle

For all his low-key affability, Mr. Alpert doesn’t phone it in. His trumpet solos were models of rhythmic precision, tonal subtlety and expressive understatement, executed without showboating.

New York Times | By Stephen Holden - March 15, 2015 - A relaxed feeling of enjoyment along with a certainty of being in good hands warmed Café Carlyle on Friday evening as Herb Alpert and Lani Hall wafted a mood of easygoing optimism into the room. Mr. Alpert, who mentioned that he will soon turn 80, still embodies the musical attitude nicknamed “laid-back” decades ago, when Southern California was America’s frontier of pleasure.

Alpert spoke with EDGE about his astonishing career, which continues with a two-week run at The Café Carlyle alongside his wife, Grammy-winning vocalist Lani Hall, and band, from March 10-21.

Edgenewyork.com | By Kevin Scott Hall - March 6, 2015 - There are few American legends who can claim the scope of a career like Herb Alpert. Over his fifty-plus year career, he has amassed nine Grammy Awards, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with co-founder of A&M Records, Jerry Moss), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and countless platinum and gold records.

Perhaps most famous for his string of hits in the '60s with the Tijuana Brass, Alpert also scored number one hits in 1968 ("This Guy's in Love With You") and 1979 ("Rise"), as well as a top ten hit with Janet Jackson ("Diamonds") in 1987.
